Lymphedema Certified Therapists
- Lymphedema refers to swelling that generally occurs in one of your arms or legs. Sometimes both arms or both legs swell. Lymphedema is most commonly caused by the removal of or damage to your lymph nodes as a part of cancer treatment. It results from a blockage in your lymphatic system, which is part of your immune system. The blockage prevents lymph fluid from draining well, and the fluid buildup leads to swelling.
- The first-line treatment for lymphedema is complex physical therapy. This treatment is aimed at improving lymphedema with manual lymphatic drainage, massage, and exercise. It advocates the use of compression stockings (at a minimum of 40 mm Hg), multilayer bandaging, or pneumatic pumps.
- The goal of lymphedema therapy is to restore function, reduce physical and psychologic suffering, and prevent the development of infection.
LSVT Certified Therapists aka BIG and LOUD Therapy
- LSVT BIG physical therapy program designed to help patients with Parkinson’s disease to improve function and slow motor deterioration by retraining sensory, motor and cognitive functions through intensive exercise and patient empowerment. LSVT BIG can be delivered by a physical or occupational therapist. This protocol was developed specifically to address the unique movement impairments for people with Parkinson disease. The program trains patients to make bigger movements and teaches the amount of effort required to produce normal movements in real world, everyday activities.
- LOUD is an intensive speech therapy treatment program. Exaggerated vocal are designed to train patients to monitor and control the volume of their voices. The program addresses causes of speech problems so patients with Parkinson’s are able to make themselves understood. The program doesn’t teach them to yell but rather to speak strongly and forcefully. LOUD is effective in any phase of the disorder but works best during the early or middle stages.
